Suffrage leader and peace advocate Mary Nettie Chase (1863-1959) was employed as a teacher at Proctor Academy in Andover, New Hampshire between 1899 to 1901. From 1902 until 1912, she served as president of the New Hampshire Woman Suffrage Association in addition to her role as a national suffrage organizer. A gifted public speaker and educator, Chase utilized her talents to fight for women’s suffrage by making over one hundred speeches at granges across the region. She was also active in the peace movement during World War I. A few years later, the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate and was subsequently sent to the states for ratification. On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment was successfully ratified and added to the U.S. Constitution, giving women across the United States the right to vote.
