The Ausable Chasm cemetery, near the shores of Lake Champlain, is the final resting place of New York State politician Matthew Adgate (1737-1818). During the American Revolution, Adgate served as a member of the Provincial Congress and as a member of the Committee of Safety, which acted as an emergency government throughout the war.

As the war raged on, New York State’s capital was moved from Albany to Kingston due to the approaching British Army. A constitutional convention was then held. Matthew Adgate was among the many county representatives who helped draft the first New York State Constitution, which was adopted on April 22, 1777.  After the war Adgate served as a New York State Assemblyman, county judge, and as a delegate to the 1788 New York State Convention to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
