The Lower Maple Grove Cemetery serves as the final resting place of Medal of Honor recipient and Civil War veteran, Sergeant Harris S. Hawthorne (1832-1911). Originating from the U.S. Civil War, the Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest military award that can be received by a member of the U.S. Armed Forces. Over 1,000 men who served within the Union Army were awarded the Medal of Honor for gallantry and bravery during the war. Harris S. Hawthorne served in Co. F. of the 121st of the New York Infantry during the U.S. Civil War. On April 6th 1865 in Sailor’s Creek, Virginia he helped capture Confederate General George Washington Custis Lee, son of Commander of the Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee. President Grover Cleveland awarded Harris S. Hawthorne the Congressional Medal of Honor for this heroic act in 1894.
