The site of Murray Hill was initially the land of the Seneca, but was developed after the American Revolution. Among its owners were the Murray family of New York City and artist John Trumbull. In 1880, Seneca Tall Chief’s body was removed from the location where it was buried at the Tonawanda Reservation, and re-interred here by his grandchildren, who said he had lived here in former times. In 1882 the Mansion at Murray Hill, built in the 1830s, was destroyed by fire. In 1936 a New York State tuberculosis sanitarium was built here, which was later conveyed to Livingston County in 1971.
