In 1822, Nathaniel Knight purchased 175 acres from Wilhelm Willink of the Holland Land Company and established his homestead here. While census records list his primary occupation as a farmer, Nathaniel was also an active community member in his capacity as an appointed official. He served as Town of Collins magistrate, assessor, supervisor, inspector of common schools, and overseer of highways. In 1830, he was elected to the New York State Assembly where he represented Erie County with Millard Fillmore, who later became the 13th President of the United States. Over the course of several years, Nathaniel leased and sold portions of his land; and by 1859, he sold his remaining property here.

Nathaniel Knight lived elsewhere until his death on October 7, 1864. He is buried at Mount Pleasant (Scrabble Hill) Cemetery in Collins, NY. As of 2022, the marker stands outside his former home, which remains a private residence.
