Oakwood Cemetery was designed in 1865 by H.B. Allen in the rural cemetery style which included winding paths, statues and obelisks as memorials, and landscaping designed to produce beautiful vistas. In 1900, the old burying grounds which had been in use since at least 1830 were annexed to Oakwood Cemetery. Two U.S. Congressmen, Micah Brooks (1775-1857) and Luther C. Peck (1800-1876) are buried here.
