The St. Regis Paper Company was founded in 1899 in Jefferson County in northern New York by George Sherman and David Anderson. The paper mill canal, dug by hand from 1899 to 1901, was considered a feat of engineering for the time period. The hydraulic power canal allowed the St. Regis Paper Company to build its mill along with company-built housing and stores for its employees, resulting in the creation of the village of Deferiet. An October 30, 1901 edition of the Watertown Daily Times referred to the St. Regis Paper Company’s “mammoth paper-making plant” and highlighted its hydraulic canal as part of its “facilities for making 100 tons of paper in a day.” The mill was in operation from 1901 until its closure in 2001.
