WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2021

In 1827 the Tompkins County Board of Supervisors authorized the establishment of a County Poor House for the region’s infirm, aged, and indigent population. In 1828 a board of trustees was established and authorized to establish the facility at an existing 120 acre farm. In January 1829, a list of rules and regulations was created. Later, in 1892 a brick building was authorized to be constructed to house men only. Work commenced in June, 1892, and was required to be completed in January, 1893. The facility served the county until its closure in 1987. Remaining patients were sent to other existing county institutions.
