John G. Rarick was born in Stillwater, Saratoga County, in 1785. He married Catharina Bellinger in August of 1812 (Findagrave.org, accessed 27 Jan 2025). Rarick served as a private in Van Dalfsen’s Regiment, New York Milia during the War of 1812. (Fold3.com. Accessed 7 Mar 2025). By 1814, John and Catharina were living in the town of Hammond, St. Lawrence County, on land that now includes Rarick Cemetery. According to a compiled record, John served as the district 11 Overseer of Highways, later known as Pathmasters, from 1829-1831 (list of Overseer of Highways, n.d.). At his death in 1847, John Rarick left his property in Hammond divided between three of his sons, Hiram, Henry and Peter. According to an 1865 county map, Peter’s portion contained the burying ground.
On November 17, 1885, a meeting was held in the District 5 school house in Hammond for the purpose of incorporating a rural cemetery association. The first trustees elected for the Rarick Burying Ground Association were James Miller, George Schermerhorn, W. A. Webster, Thomas Phillips, Eugene Dale, Andrew Nicol, and Otis Gardiner.
As of 2025, the Rarick Cemetery held over 630 interments including veterans from the War of 1812, the Civil War and subsequent conflicts.
