By 1872, Riverside Station in Riparius in Warren County, New York had been established along the Adirondack Railway, a line running from Saratoga Springs to North Creek that provided a link to the Adirondack region. The railway was used to ship freight such as wood and farm products, and, what became increasingly important to the development of the local economy, thousands of passengers traveling to area resorts and communities in the Adirondacks.
In 1889, the Adirondack Railway was acquired by the Delaware and Hudson (D&H) and was then operated as the railroad company’s Adirondack Branch. At Riverside Station, stagecoaches would bring tourists to the once difficult to reach surrounding locales and to steamboats on Schroon Lake. Riverside Station became one of the busiest on the line. Regarding the continued growth and importance of Riverside Station, which necessitated the building of a new passenger station at the stop, the April 10, 1913 Warrensburgh News reported the following:
Riverside has become the most important station on the division, which extends from Saratoga Springs to North Creek, and travel from the cities to this station is unusually heavy, especially during the summer months and the fall hunting season. Stage lines connect Riverside with the numerous hamlets in every direction.
The new station building was completed by the end of September 1913. The building continued to serve the community until being closed in 1962. In November of that year, the D&H received authorization to discontinue all services at Riverside and close the station building. It was reported that the railroad had been operating the station at a continual loss by that point in time (North Creek News-Enterprise, November 21, 1962).
However, even after its closure Riverside Station has continued to play a role in the local tourism industry. In 1997, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. As of 2025, Riverside Station and a forty mile stretch of the former railroad are owned by Warren County and overseen by Warren County Parks, Recreation & Railroad, and railbike excursions to Riverside Station are offered by Revolution Rail Co. during the summer months.
