RR BRIDGE SITECOVERED BRIDGE ACROSS HONEOYE
CREEK BUILT BY NY CENTRAL
RAILROAD CA. 1853, REPLACED BY
IRON BRIDGE 1893. LIMESTONE
ABUTMENT STILL STANDS.
WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2025
During the mid-19th century, the New York Central Railroad constructed a covered bridge across Honeoye Creek for its line connecting Canandaigua and Niagara Falls. Colloquially, the route was referred to as the “peanut” line, a reference to the first cargo supposedly shipped across it.
The original covered bridge was replaced after four decades with an iron bridge as reported in The Honeoye Falls Times on Thursday, August 3rd, 1803.
The Central’s New Bridge for the “Peanut” road, across the Honeoye creek in this village, was completed early this week. A force of about fifty iron workers and carpenters have been pushing the work for more than three weeks…the covering of the old bridge was first town down and the timbers were sawed off to permit the iron spans to fit down in place on the stone abutments. The bridge is constructed of Iron and is over 210 Feet long.
Though the Railroad Bridge has since been dismantled, the limestone abutment remains standing in Honeoye Creek, and it is visible from the location of the historical marker.
