The Salt Battery, one of four batteries located along the shoreline of Youngstown, was constructed during the War of 1812 by American forces. Barrels of salt, obtained from shipments sent along the shoreline of Lake Ontario, were stacked and covered by earth to construct the fortification. The battery inflicted heavy damage on the wooden buildings within Fort George and the stockade surrounding it.
