In 1825, the first burials were established on the grounds of the Presbyterian church in Erin, New York. This site eventually became Scotchtown Cemetery. Although the original church is no longer standing, the grounds transitioned into a formal community cemetery with the establishment of the Scotchtown Cemetery Association on February 11, 1881.

The cemetery currently serves as the final resting place for over 2,000 individuals and remains an active burial ground as of 2026.

A total of 58 veterans are reported to be interred at Scotchtown, representing major American conflicts from the 19th century to the present.

  • Civil War: Records include William H. Neish, a 2nd Lieutenant in Company A of the 17th NY Cavalry, and Sylvester Blauvelt, a private in the 147th NY Infantry.
  • Spanish-American War: Notable burials include Fred B. Smith, a Lieutenant Artificer for the 7th NY Battery, and James M. Mitchell, a private in Company L of the 3rd NY Infantry Regiment.
  • 20th-Century Conflicts: The cemetery contains multiple veterans from World War I and World War II, as well as those who served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
