Civil War veteran Seth Merritt Flint (1846-1941) was likely the last surviving witness to General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. He joined the Union Army at the age of 15 (giving his age as 18 and a fake name), and became a bugler and part of General Ulysses S. Grant’s escort. He witnessed the end of the war on April 9, 1865, and played taps after the surrender. Flint was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, in his hometown of Worcester, N.Y.
