WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2023

On November 11, 1922, Jewish residents of Nassau County, New York established a congregation under the name United Community Center. The following year the congregation built a synagogue in Cedarhurst, New York. The new synagogue was dedicated on September 14, 1924 and named Temple Beth El. The following day’s edition of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported on the dedication, noting that the new temple cost around $140,000 to build of brick and stone with interior furnishings made of oak and mahogany.

Over the years, Temple Beth El became the dominant name used and in 1972, the congregation officially changed its name from United Community Center to Temple Beth El. As of 2023, Temple Beth El continues to serve the surrounding Jewish community.
