TEMPLE ISRAEL
CONGREGATION INCORPORATED
OCTOBER 14, 1920 BY RESIDENTS
OF MANHATTAN, BROOKLYN AND
LONG BEACH. SYNAGOGUE
DEDICATED AUGUST 31, 1924.
WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2023

On October 14, 1920, Jewish residents of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Long Beach established the congregation of Temple Israel in Long Beach on Long Island in Nassau County, New York. Soon after, funds were raised, and a synagogue was built on Riverside Boulevard in Long Beach. The synagogue was completed and dedicated on August 31, 1924. The next day’s edition of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported that the new temple cost $100,000 to construct. It also reported on the day’s festivities, noting that one hundred and fifty children participated in a pageant at the new temple that morning, followed by ceremonies held in the afternoon.

As of 2023, Temple Israel continues to serve the Jewish community of Long Beach.
