VOTES FOR WOMEN
NONA MAHONEY, DALLAS SUFFRAGE
LEADER, GAINED REP. BARRY
MILLER’S SUPPORT OF SUFFRAGE
BY OBTAINING 10,000 WOMEN’S
SIGNATURES ON 1918 PETITION
WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2020

Dallas suffrage leader, Nona Mahoney, achieved the seemingly impossible when she obtained the signatures of 10,000 women in favor of gaining the right for women to vote. State Representative Barry Miller believed that there was a lack of pro-suffrage sentiment in Texas. As a result, Representative Miller posed a challenge. If suffragists were able to demonstrate a strong pro-suffrage public interest by collecting 5,000 signatures, he would support their efforts. Undeterred, Mahoney not only achieved her goal of 5,000 signatures, she doubled Miller’s number and gathered 10,000 signatures for her petition.
