Bigger and Better Community Service Event Invites Public to Participate April 25-27
SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Volunteers are invited to participate in a social media photo challenge as part of the William G. Pomeroy Foundation’s bigger and better National Historic Marker Weekend on Friday, April 25 through Sunday, April 27.
National Historic Marker Weekend encourages volunteers to have fun with their kids, grandkids, friends and neighbors while cleaning historical markers and learning about local history. The national event is free and open to the public. Registered volunteers can participate in any of the following Marker Weekend Photo Challenge categories: most historical markers cleaned, most Pomeroy markers cleaned, best before and after photos, team with the most volunteers, team spirit (e.g. fun and festive group projects), community spirit (e.g. communitywide celebrations and events), and most liked Marker Weekend social media post. According to The Historical Marker Database (HMdb.org), more than 210,000 markers are in the U.S. Regular care and maintenance are key for helping to prevent deterioration so that markers can be enjoyed now and by future generations. To locate markers in your area, go to HMdb.org or the Pomeroy Foundation’s marker map: https://www.wgpfoundation.org/history/map/. Volunteers should comply with safety and parking regulations, as well as seek permission when making plans to clean a marker.
This year’s celebration is coming soon and is bigger and better than ever. Originally celebrated as National Historic Marker Day, the festivities have expanded to a three-day event now dubbed National Historic Marker Weekend.
