National Historic Marker Weekend Welcomes Volunteers April 24-26

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—From student groups and families to civic organizations and historical societies, volunteers across the United States are participating in the William G. Pomeroy Foundation’s National Historic Marker Weekend from Friday, April 24 through Sunday, April 26.

According to The Historical Marker Database (HMdb.org), more than 225,000 markers exist in the United States. Maintenance and care are key for helping to prevent deterioration so that markers can be enjoyed now and by future generations.

National Historic Marker Weekend encourages people to take care of historical markers in their communities while learning about and sharing local history. The national community service event is free and open to the public.

Volunteers can sign up through the Pomeroy Foundation’s National Historic Marker Weekend webpage: https://www.wgpfoundation.org/national-historic-marker-day/.

To celebrate volunteer efforts, participants are invited to submit photos in this year’s categories: Best Before & After, Team Spirit, Largest Volunteer Group, Student Involvement, Creative Moment, Social Media Engagement, and Community Impact.

Registered volunteers are encouraged to share Marker Weekend project photos using #NationalHistoricMarkerWeekend and #PomeroyFoundation. Select submissions may be featured on the Foundation’s website and social media. Registered participants are also eligible to be named to the William G. Pomeroy Historical Marker Honor Roll and entered into a special giveaway.

To locate markers in your area, go to HMdb.org or the Pomeroy Foundation’s marker map: https://www.wgpfoundation.org/history/map/.

Volunteers should comply with safety and parking regulations, as well as seek permission when making plans to clean a marker.
