Volunteers Invited to Celebrate National Historic Marker Weekend, April 25-27

Bigger and Better Community Service Event Welcomes The History Guy as Keynote Speaker

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Volunteers across the United States are getting ready for three days of fun and celebration with their kids, grandkids, friends and neighbors during National Historic Marker Weekend taking place Friday, April 25 through Sunday, April 27. Participation is free and open to the public.

Created by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, National Historic Marker Weekend encourages people to have fun celebrating local history while beautifying their communities by cleaning historical markers. Volunteers can sign up to participate through the Pomeroy Foundation’s National Historic Marker Weekend webpage: https://www.wgpfoundation.org/national-historic-marker-day/.

Registered volunteers will receive stickers and be entered into a giveaway after sharing photos of their service projects on social media and mentioning the Pomeroy Foundation.

This year’s celebration is coming soon and is bigger and better than ever. Originally celebrated as National Historic Marker Day, the festivities have expanded to a three-day event now dubbed National Historic Marker Weekend. To kick off the excitement, the Pomeroy Foundation is welcoming YouTube celebrity The History Guy as the keynote for the first-ever online summit for volunteers on Wednesday, April 2. More information is available on the Pomeroy Foundation’s website. Spots are limited.

According to The Historical Marker Database (HMdb.org), there are more than 210,000 markers in the U.S. Regular care and maintenance is key to help prevent deterioration so that markers can be enjoyed now and by future generations. To locate markers in your area, go to HMdb.org or the Pomeroy Foundation’s marker map: https://www.wgpfoundation.org/history/map/. Volunteers should comply with safety and parking regulations, as well as seek permission when making plans to clean a marker.
