WILLIAM G. POMEROY FOUNDATION 2019

Stretching north to south, from Utica to Binghamton, the Chenango Canal was important for commerce, trade, and travel. In an attempt to compete with the innovation of trains and railroads, the Chenango Canal Extension was planned. Construction began in 1865 but was never completed and was subsequently abandoned in 1872. As of 2019, remnants of the old towpath on Front Street and Kimble Road are all that remains from this endeavor.
