Established in 1816, the Meredith Square Cemetery not only serves as the final resting place of early community members but also as a burial site of veterans from the American Revolution and U.S. Civil War. It is interesting to note that among headstones located here are those carved by famous headstone carver J.W. Stewart aka “Coffin Man”. While it remains unknown how many stones Stewart carved, his headstones possessed a similar shape and design elements and almost always featured his signature coffin at the bottom of the stone which gave him the nickname of “Coffin Man”.
