Education is an integral part of society, however historically, education has come a long way.  Before the creation of large centralized schools, one room school houses served rural communities and played an important role in the education of local children. This is the site of the former District No. 13 School of South Maplewood. The District No. 13 School was established as early as 1875 and it served as the center of education for the community for several decades. As roads and modes of transportation improved, schools began to be consolidated, which resulted in the closing of many one room schoolhouses. The District No. 13 School was eventually closed and the land sold to private owners in 1965.
